Lecrae says “Cancel Culture is Stupid”, talks Restoration, God vs Religion, Overcoming Depression
Hard Knock Tv’s Nick Huff Barili sits down with Lecrae for in-depth interview. Lecrae talks childhood, first jobs working at YMCA, grocery store, cable company, first rap check, how his mom didn’t want him to rap but how he made his mom proud. As the interview continues, Lecrae lets us into his creative process, working with S1, concept for new album Restoration, getting diagnosed with clinical depression and the healing process. Lecrae shares that he was on a 2 year downward spiral where he almost lost everything and it culminated in him drinking to calm down. Lecrae lets us into his steps to recovery and the meaning behind the intro track “Restore Me” when he stopped believing in God for a season. When talking about restoration in an era of cancel culture, Lecrae says “Cancel culture is stupid. Im down for accountability culture!” He goes on to talk about inmates being the forgotten people of our society, why its important for him to tour in prisons and he shares wisdom that he picked up from conversation with inmates. As the interview switches topics, Lecrae says that its all one big Truman show, that “Fame is a drug” and social media plays into that. Lecrae shares stories of being at clubs and at Diddy’s house and how he cautions he artists not to buy into the hype and stay grounded. Lecrae is at a place in life where he doesn’t need symbols of success any more. Lecrae says that its easy to get stuck in a character like Jim Carrey losing himself inside Andy Kaufman. Nick asks Lecrae about what makes him happy and what it was like meeting his biological father whom Lecrae recently connected with. Lecrae breaks downs the meaning and stories behind songs like “Self Discovery”, “Saturday Night” and “Deep End”. Lecrae and Nick also talk about race and religion. Lecrae says that he stopped believing in God for a season but then he realized that the foundation is strong but that what must be torn down is all the other stuff. That white nationalism must be disconnected from the western church. Lecrae goes on to talk about showing his kids the footage of George Floyd’s murder and that its hard to have that conversation but that he wants his kids to be aware of whats going on. Lastly, Lecrae talks about his up coming book “I Am Restored”. This episode covers a lot more topics as Nick and Lecrae talked for over an hour!
