Congressman Castro on Latinos Being Written Out of US History, Stereotypes Perpetuated by Hollywood
On today’s episode of Hard Knock TV Nick Huff Barili is joined by Congressman Joaquin Castro. As Hollywood gets ready for its big night at the Oscars, Latinos have ones again been excluded from the majority of the nominations. Although there are over 60 Million Latinos in the US, accounting for nearly 20 percent of the population, they represent only 5 percent of the movie roles. Of those 5 percent the majority feature stereotypical depictions of Latinos. Congressman Castro and Nick talk about the danger these stereotypes play in crafting the narrative of Latinos as criminals and how the lack of representation ignores Latinos significance in US history. Nick co-founded an organization called L.I.M.A (Latinos in Media and Arts) and for the last year and a half has been working with the Hispanic Caucus, Congressman Castro and his staff to address the lack of Latino representation.
